DAY 1: Flush, bead and basic pavé setting
We will be setting 2 and 3mm round faceted gems to add interest to your pieces using flush (aka gypsy), bead and pavé (in a row) settings.

Day 2: Problem Solving
Curtis will help you problem solve settings that have caused difficulties. Bring your unfinished project with stones or setting challenges to get answers on how to complete your gemstone pieces.

WE PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING EQUIPMENT: Safety goggles, but you may bring your own if you wish.

STUDENTS SHOULD BE FAMILIAR WITH beginning metalsmithing techniques, including using a flex shaft


STUDENTS BRING THE FOLLOWING (Detailed list available for download here.)

  • 3 or more finished (without stones) rings: 2mm thick by 2.5-3mm wide in any ring size
  • Pens
  • Notebook
  • Camera (phone cameras can work well) for recording samples
  • Ear plugs or ear muffs (as needed)
  • Metal scribe
  • Tweezers
  • Point burnisher
  • Ball, heart, cone (aka flame) and setting burrs (details TBD)
  • Cup burrs
  • Knife graver (TBD)

LUNCH
Please bring your own lunch. We have a refrigerator, microwave and convection oven. We provide coffee and  tea. The refrigerator has filtered water. If you don’t want to bring a lunch, there are fast food restaurants nearby.

COVID-19 GUIDELINES

For the health and safety our staff and students, students are required to be fully vaccinated and boosted. All workshop participants are required to agree to and execute the COVID-19 and General Liability releases prior to beginning the workshop.

CANCELLATION POLICY
In the event the guild must cancel a class, you will be notified prior to the start date and will be issued a full refund.

Cancellations more than two weeks prior to class are refundable less a 5% service fee. Cancellations two weeks or less prior to class are not refundable unless there is a wait list for the class AND the seat is filled.

More About Curtis Hidemasa Arima

Curtis Hidemasa Arima

Curtis Hidemasa Arima is an educator and metalsmith who is drawn to the transformative nature of materials and the memory, emotion, and history that objects can hold. He earned a BFA from California College of Arts and Crafts and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy. His jewelry and sculpture has been exhibited/published nationally and internationally.  He has lectured and taught workshops in the US, Japan, and China. He is on the Board of Directors of the Ethical Metalsmiths and part of their Education Committee.  As current Professor and Chair of the Jewelry & Metal Art Program at California College of the Arts, he enjoys mentoring students to find their artistic identity and connection to more sustainable practices.

His publications include Metalsmith Magazine, Sculpture Magazine, Lapidary Journal, the Lark 500 Series books, and New Brooches.
