Alison Antelman Workshop
February 3-5, 2017

We are excited to announce Alison Antelman in a 3-day workshop, ‘Engineering Your Way Out”, MBMAG’s first workshop of the year.

Develop your ability to solve jewelry fabrication problems and learn solutions to common design and fabrication challenges. Design and create a hinged bracelet or necklace. Students create a “map” of their project, learn to make irregular shaped bezel settings for unusually shaped stones, add hinges and where to place them for irregular shapes and using stainless steel wire, solder sterling terminations to the steel, add a hook clasp and complete your project.

Students are guided through the process along with discussion, case studies and actual examples of problems as well as their solutions. We will explore the interplay of movement and functionality in jewelry and the approach from the wearer’s point of view (ie: does it sit funny on the neck, is it too heavy, does the pendant flop over). The real benefit to this class is learning how to engineer your jewelry projects as you discover solutions to common design and fabrication challenges. Step-by-step handouts are supplied along with samples. Basic fabrication and soldering required. Continue reading “Alison Antelman Workshop – Feb 3-5 – Registration now open”

The Links Challenge

Links Challenge - MBMAG
Links Challenge - MBMAG

MBMAG presents:  THE LINKS CHALLENGE

Quite a few years ago the MBMAG asked each of the members to create a small piece of work that would reflect their style.  This piece would have a means to connect it on both ends and once linked together would become one chain of unique works.

A photograph of a portion of the Original Links Project is above.

We would like to start a new “Links Project” which would demonstrate each of our member’s style and personality.  This new chain would be exhibited, along with the original chain at our exhibits or events.

The individual pieces should range from 1″ x 1″ to 1-1/2″ x 2″.
The key is that it should be linkable and reflect the individual’s style.

The Challenge:

  • MBMAG members who wish to accept the challenge will need to purchase a kit for $25.  One kit per member.
  • There will be 9 items in the kit ie:  Sterling Silver Sheet, Copper Wire, Silver tubing, etc.
  • Kits will be given out at the Summer MBMAG Gathering, August 16,2015.
  • Members not able to attend the Summer Gathering can purchase a kit with an added $5. Fee for shipping. Orders made after the gathering will be subject to kits on hand.
  • Each entry must include at least  5 of the 9 materials included in the kit, to be eligible for the prize money.
  • You will be allowed one wildcard item, such as a cabachon stone, Enamel,Resin, glass, pencil, found object, etc.
  • You may use any fabrication technique, for example: fusing, soldering, roller mill, etching, fold forming,  rivets, etc…
  • The Link must be completed for the Winter MBMAG party where members will vote for Best Link! We will be also asking you to photograph your link and have a paragraph written about your link.
  • The voting will be done without names of the Artist.
  • Prize Money: 1st Place $250. 2nd Place $100. 3rd Place $50.

Adornment 2015

MBMAG is excited to present a gallery exhibition opportunity this December and January.  Many of our members have been looking for new exhibit opportunities, so not only is this an opportunity to enhance your resume, but also a chance to market work in a gallery setting.  This gallery has an online presence, see Z Folio.

The theme Adornment may be interpreted as you wish. A little research on the meaning of the word might inspire you. Each artist may submit up to two new pieces of jewelry or small sculpture not previously shown in a Guild exhibit. This announcement is far in advance of the deadline, to give you time to create something new.  All pieces submitted to this show must be for sale, and priced with commissions to the gallery in mind (50% to artist/50% to gallery).

Our next MBMAG show will be held Oct. 24 through Dec. 18, 2014 at the Pacific Grove Art Center. The entry deadline will be late August and pieces will be due in early October. Although we are still finalizing arrangements with the Center, we want to give you time to create some new and special work for this exhibit.   We will accept up to three pieces from each artist.  Entry fee and other details will be forthcoming as soon as possible.

The Title of the exhibit:  “Small Wonders: The Magic of Macro to Micro”

We are hoping our members will challenge themselves with this exhibit. The concept stems from a field trip some of our members were taking. Mary Luke happened to see a building in downtown San Jose about which she exclaimed, “That’s an ugly building but it would make a really lovely brooch.” We liked that idea and think it can be expanded to include anything that the artist wants to use as a model to scale down to sculpture size or jewelry size or wearable art size.  The sky’s the limit, literally.  It could be a naturally occurring object (i.e., rock, tree, wave, etc.) or an architectural structure or a detail of something that is large.  The challenge would be to re-imagine it, re-construct it, re-think it into an art piece. Along with your piece, we’d like to have a photo, graphic representation, or even the object itself, if small enough, to present next to the finished work.

Volunteers will be needed to help with all aspects of the show, from bringing snacks for the opening reception, to checking in artwork, to creating the artist’s bio book. We’ll also need furniture movers  and someone who can supply and drive a truck. Please email me if you can take on a job of any size to make this show a success.

Pat Evans
Small Wonders Chairperson
