Angela will talk about her work and her opening SCRAP exhibit. Lynn will show a short video about her teaching trip to Rosebud Reservation and talk a bit about other educational programs that she is involved in.

Lynn is collecting tools and donations to complete the “tool kit” she left for the students to use at the school on Rosebud Reservation. Below is what they are missing. You can bring any donations to the meeting.

The Links Challenge

Links Challenge - MBMAG
Links Challenge - MBMAG

MBMAG presents:  THE LINKS CHALLENGE

Quite a few years ago the MBMAG asked each of the members to create a small piece of work that would reflect their style.  This piece would have a means to connect it on both ends and once linked together would become one chain of unique works.

A photograph of a portion of the Original Links Project is above.

We would like to start a new “Links Project” which would demonstrate each of our member’s style and personality.  This new chain would be exhibited, along with the original chain at our exhibits or events.

The individual pieces should range from 1″ x 1″ to 1-1/2″ x 2″.
The key is that it should be linkable and reflect the individual’s style.

The Challenge:

  • MBMAG members who wish to accept the challenge will need to purchase a kit for $25.  One kit per member.
  • There will be 9 items in the kit ie:  Sterling Silver Sheet, Copper Wire, Silver tubing, etc.
  • Kits will be given out at the Summer MBMAG Gathering, August 16,2015.
  • Members not able to attend the Summer Gathering can purchase a kit with an added $5. Fee for shipping. Orders made after the gathering will be subject to kits on hand.
  • Each entry must include at least  5 of the 9 materials included in the kit, to be eligible for the prize money.
  • You will be allowed one wildcard item, such as a cabachon stone, Enamel,Resin, glass, pencil, found object, etc.
  • You may use any fabrication technique, for example: fusing, soldering, roller mill, etching, fold forming,  rivets, etc…
  • The Link must be completed for the Winter MBMAG party where members will vote for Best Link! We will be also asking you to photograph your link and have a paragraph written about your link.
  • The voting will be done without names of the Artist.
  • Prize Money: 1st Place $250. 2nd Place $100. 3rd Place $50.
  • All links will become part of the MBMAG Chain and property of MBMAG. The MBMAG Links Chain will be displayed at various MBMAG events.

Made with Love Reception – Feb 2015

Early Spring - Susan Shallenberger
Early Spring – Susan Shallenberger

All of my experiences leading up to the “Made With Love” show at the Many Hands Gallery in Capitola, may sound familiar. The large necklace I call ‘Early Spring” was still being assembled the day before we were to hand them in! I talked with a couple of other jewelry makers who said they were in the same boat, but staying afloat. The tiny screws I ordered arrived the night before, so I knew it would be completed in time.

It is so exciting to actually see everyone’s pieces displayed so beautifully in the cases. I love that we did not have to compete to get our jewelry in the show. Just think, now I can tell people I displayed in a jewelry show with the likes of Dawn Nakanishi and Lynn Guenther! Of course, there is a huge difference between the levels of expertise, but it still gives artists like me some bragging rights!

A real crowd pleaser
A real crowd pleaser

The artists’ reception was crowded and noisy, just like it should be. Jockeying our way up to the cases, we were immediately drawn to the display of bright shiny objects. It was fun to bump into people we hadn’t had a chance to talk with in a while, and ask about their pieces. All that artist energy was exciting, and we weren’t even missing the Super Bowl.

A serious metals discussion
A serious metals discussion, I am sure!

I have to admit I have been back to Many Hands Gallery a few times since the opening, just to absorb it all again. One day one of the women who works there said she “loved my necklace,” which really made my day! So if you haven’t been back, it is definitely worth your time to visit and enjoy the experience over and over.
